We are continuously working to maintain and improve the water system. Some of the major projects we are currently working on involve the installation of new, or the replacement of existing, equipment and facilities needed to provide safe, reliable water service.
This steel water storage tank holds 2,000,000 gallons of drinking water and water for fire protection and is located off Norfolk Road in Torrington, Connecticut. Routine inspections of the steel determined the paint coating was due for renewal and some appurtenances on the tank would be replaced. This tank was built in 1995 and this year we will perform a complete cleaning and recoating of the tank’s interior and exterior.
Torrington Water Company has a contract for maintenance of their steel tanks and this work is being executed by Utility Services Group, one of the largest tank rehabilitation contractors in the country. The work involves the power washing and abrasive cleaning of the tanks interior and exterior and then reapplying of new paint coating that will protect the steel for a period of 20–25 years.
During the early stages of the old coating removal, the contractor will use powerful blowers and vacuum pumps to remove the paint and cleanse the air for the workers and environment. Based on concerns from the public, we will adjust our schedule to reduce the time the blowers and vacuum pumps run and shifting this time into the working day and avoiding early mornings or late afternoons. We are estimating the rehabilitation work will be completed by the end of August 2025.
