Ball Pond PFAS removal treatment projects to start on May 15

NEW FAIRFIELD, CONN. – May 13, 2024 – Aquarion Water Company continues to perform essential work on water infrastructure in New Fairfield necessary to ensure continued system water quality.

On May 15, Aquarion’s contractor – Oxford-based Kovacs Construction Co., Inc. – will begin construction on its water treatment facilities located at 2 Biggs Ave, and shortly afterward at 12 Renda St. At each of these facilities, new stand-alone buildings will be constructed to house treatment equipment for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) removal from drinking water. The project aims to ensure that drinking water treated at these facilities complies with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s National Primary Drinking Water Regulation for six PFAS, which was announced on April 10, 2024. The projects are expected to be completed by December 2024.

“We greatly appreciate residents’ patience during this project,” said Mike Hiltz, Aquarion’s Manager of Capital Delivery, Engineering and Planning. “We will work closely with our customers, contractors, and town officials to coordinate the work and minimize disruptions.”

Due to construction, residences and businesses should expect minor traffic between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. To keep customers informed about scheduled/unscheduled work, Aquarion utilizes an Everbridge notification system to contact affected customers.
